Obi stated, “When President Jonathan conceded defeat in the 2015 elections, choosing humanistic principles over personal ambition, he made a choice that few in power would. He chose peace over power, unity over ambition, and the future of Nigeria over the lure of office. This act not only calmed a nation at a tipping point but became a landmark for democratic maturity across Africa. It was a courageous, selfless decision that restored faith in democracy and inspired hope across the continent.”

He went on to commend Jonathan’s post-presidency contributions, noting his ongoing efforts in election observation, conflict resolution, and democratic advocacy. Obi said, “True leadership is defined not by how long one stays in office, but by the positive impact one leaves behind—Jonathan has proven this through his continued service.”

Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy would thrive if today’s leaders embraced Jonathan’s humility and commitment to the nation. He argued that democracy is not merely about elections but about upholding accountability, justice, and serving the people.

“If today’s leaders can adopt even a fraction of President Jonathan’s humility and dedication to nationhood, Nigeria would be on a surer path to democratic consolidation, inclusive governance, and national progress. Unfortunately, we are witnessing leaders whose words claim to support democracy, but whose actions undermine it through electoral fraud, suppression of dissent, and self-serving ambitions,” he said.

Obi concluded, “Democracy is about more than just elections. It’s about accountability, justice, and service to the people. We cannot continue to preach democracy while silencing critics, weakening institutions, and disregarding the will of the people.”
