Senator David Mark Demands Border Fencing to Secure Nigeria’s Borders Amidst Growing Insecurity”

Mark urged President Bola Tinubu’s government to explore new approaches, drawing inspiration from international security models employed by countries such as the United States, Israel, and India, particularly the implementation of border fencing.

He stressed that such measures could be pivotal in curbing the flow of terrorism and criminal activity, particularly in the North Central region, which has been heavily affected by ongoing violence.

Speaking during the Easter celebrations in Kano, Mark, through his Special Adviser on Media, Paul Mumeh, highlighted the continuous unrest in North Central Nigeria, particularly in Plateau and Benue states, where violent attacks have wreaked havoc on local communities.

Mark expressed grave concern over the incessant tragedies, including killings, kidnappings, and displacement of citizens, which have become a distressing norm in these areas.

“The growing menace of violent crimes, kidnapping, and armed herdsmen ravaging parts of the country demands urgent action,” he stated.

He proposed a change in policy, suggesting that the perpetrators of these acts be officially recognized as terrorists.

“We must confront the reality. If these are not terrorists, then why are they killing people, destroying communities, and forcing citizens from their ancestral homes?” he asked.

Drawing on the success of international border security models, Mark recommended strengthening Nigeria’s border control, saying, “We must prevent criminal elements from infiltrating the country. It’s time to rethink our strategy. Perhaps we should consider fencing our borders, as countries like India, Israel, and the U.S. have done.”

He emphasized that this approach should be coupled with a comprehensive mandate to combat terrorism, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

Offering his condolences to the victims of recent violence, Mark extended his sympathy to the affected communities and state governments.

These remarks came after the tragic attack on Zilkke village in Plateau’s Bassa Local Government Area, which resulted in over 50 deaths and the destruction of dozens of homes. Additionally, suspected herders launched deadly raids on Logo and Ukum LGAs in Benue, claiming the lives of more than 56 people on Good Friday.
