According to Ireporter Online, the Federal Government has confirmed the death of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away at the age of 50.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the development on Wednesday in Abuja through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, noting that the senior diplomat died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, after a prolonged illness.

In its statement, the ministry described Lele as a dedicated public servant who had been serving as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division before his recent appointment as ambassador-designate to Algeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following Senate confirmation.

Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University Kano and had previously served in various Nigerian diplomatic missions, including postings in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh. The ministry further highlighted his reputation for intellectual depth, strategic thinking, and commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy goals.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who received the remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, described the late diplomat as a hardworking, humble, and exemplary officer whose loss would be deeply felt within the Foreign Service.

Lele was laid to rest on Wednesday in Kano according to Islamic rites. The ministry described his death as a profound loss to his family, colleagues, and the entire Foreign Service community, as well as to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
