Phil Jones Breaks Silence On Ronaldo Vs Messi GOAT Debate – Who Comes Out On Top?
According to Ireporter Online, former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has shared his thoughts on football’s ongoing Greatest of All Time (GOAT) debate, naming Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Lionel Messi.
Jones, who played alongside Ronaldo during the Portuguese star’s second stint at Old Trafford and faced Messi in UEFA Champions League matches with Barcelona, offered a rare perspective on both players. When asked to choose between the two, he admitted the decision was difficult but ultimately sided with Ronaldo. “Picking between Ronaldo and Messi is like choosing between your mum and your dad. I will go with Cristiano,” Jones told ESPN UK.
The rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi has defined modern football for more than two decades, with the pair collectively winning 13 Ballon d’Or awards and breaking numerous records across European and international football. Jones emphasized that comparing the two goes beyond statistics or trophies, highlighting the distinct styles and personalities that have driven the sport forward.
Reflecting on football’s all-time elite, Jones also shared his picks in other positions, naming Robin van Persie as the best finisher, Paul Scholes as the finest playmaker, Sergio Ramos as the greatest defender, Gianluigi Buffon as the top goalkeeper, Ryan Giggs as the most dangerous winger, and Zinedine Zidane as the best ball striker.
The numbers behind the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry continue to impress. Ronaldo has scored 961 official career goals for club and country, while Messi has netted 896, making them the highest scorers in professional football history. Ronaldo has achieved over 100 goals for four clubs and for Portugal, while Messi scored more than 650 goals for Barcelona over 17 seasons and has maintained success with Argentina.
Both players remain active in 2026, with Ronaldo netting 18 goals for Al Nassr so far amid reported tensions with the club’s ownership, while Messi prepares to defend the MLS title with Inter Miami, starting February 21 against LAFC.
