Policemen, Soldiers Injured As Troops Destroy IPOB Training Camps In Anambra, Imo

On Monday, July 31, 2023, a joint operation involving troops from the 82 Division Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police, and other security agencies conducted raids on hideouts and training camps belonging to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Orsomoghu Forest, which spans Anambra and Imo States.

The operation was carried out as part of the ongoing efforts to prevent the enforcement of the illegal sit-at-home order declared by IPOB and ESN. According to Onyema Nwachukwu, the spokesperson of the Army, the troops were alerted to the violent activities of the group, which was enforcing the two-week sit-at-home order in areas such as Onitsha, Nnewi, and Iheme Obosi in Anambra State, and New Market in Enugu State.

During the raid, the troops successfully cleared IPOB camps in Ekeututu, Orsomoghu, Lilu, and Mother Valley camps. The group’s armed fighters, however, engaged the troops by detonating Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), known as Ogbunigwe, and firing from locally fabricated mortar tubes. Despite this, the troops managed to overpower the group, forcing them to abandon their positions as they fled into nearby bushes with gunshot wounds.

Further searches of the hideouts led to the arrest of five fleeing members of the group. Additionally, the troops recovered one IPOB flag, one CCTV camera, two detonated IED bombs, and a fabricated mortar tube.

During the operation, five soldiers and two Nigeria Police operatives sustained injuries from the IED detonated by the criminals.
