Popular Airline To Weigh Passengers Before Their Flights
Passengers traveling with Korean Air over the next few weeks might encounter an additional procedure before boarding – being weighed.
This new policy, however, should not be mistaken for body shaming. Korean Air is just one of several airlines worldwide that are obligated to periodically collect aircraft weight data.
As per the airline’s announcement, this initiative will impact certain travelers departing from Gimpo International Airport (GMP) from August 28 to September 3 and from Incheon International Airport (ICA) between September 8 and 19.

The weighing process will be conducted anonymously for both passengers and their luggage.
The collected data will then be shared with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the country.
Korean Air assures passengers that they have the option to decline participation in this weight data collection by informing a staff member.
While some travelers might find the idea of stepping on a scale unexpected, it’s worth noting that airlines are often required to implement such measures by governmental aviation authorities.
Air New Zealand also carried out a similar program earlier this year, targeting customers on its international routes, including the lengthy route between Auckland and New York’s JFK. The national carrier’s representative emphasized, “We understand that stepping on the scales can be a bit daunting. We want to reassure our customers that no visible display is present anywhere, and your weight remains private.”
Gathering this data helps airlines make informed decisions regarding fuel requirements and weight distribution onboard the aircraft.
