Port Harcourt Facility Faces Setbacks Amid Calibration Delays
The excitement surrounding the reopening of the Port Harcourt Refinery earlier this week has quickly faded, leaving Nigerians uncertain about its operational status.
A Friday visit by Saturday PUNCH revealed no activities at the refinery, with workers on site stating that calibration processes could extend into the following week……READ MORE
While the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Melee Kyari, inaugurated the facility on Tuesday, skepticism grew after claims emerged that 200 petrol trucks were being loaded daily, reportedly from old storage stock.
During the visit, refinery workers revealed that the “dead stock” of petroleum products from prior operations was being evacuated. These include Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), and Automated Gas Oil (AGO), which require extensive purification before commercial use.
An anonymous source added that the refinery is operating largely on manual systems, which are incompatible with modern digital technology. Workers also confirmed ongoing calibration of meters and cleaning of tanks as reasons for the halt in operations.
On-site, the loading bay remained deserted, with idle trucks parked and workers expressing uncertainty about when loading activities might resume. Observers noted that current PMS reserves might only suffice to fill five trucks, with further activities expected to commence after calibration is complete next week.
In response to public skepticism, the NNPCL issued a statement dismissing claims that the refinery is non-functional, citing integration between old and new facilities.
Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Petroleum visited the facility on Thursday, though the findings from their inspection remain undisclosed. Efforts to reach NNPCL’s spokesperson for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
