This visit came after reports cast doubt on the refinery’s functionality, despite its reported restart of crude oil processing on November 26, following several years of inactivity.

Onanuga, having toured the facility under the guidance of Managing Director Ibrahim Onoja, expressed confidence in the refinery’s operations, stating that it is currently running at 70% of its installed capacity, with plans to increase output soon. While not yet operating at full capacity, Onanuga emphasized that the refinery is working well and producing various petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, kerosene, low-pour fuel oil, and LPG.

He reassured the public that the refinery receives adequate crude supplies, contrary to earlier claims that it lacked raw materials. Additionally, Onanuga highlighted that old machinery had been replaced with modern equipment that meets international standards, including parts of the 300km new pipelines.

“The recent upgrades have transformed the refinery into a state-of-the-art facility,” Onanuga stated, praising the efforts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited and the refinery team for bringing the facility back to life. He also mentioned that the second Port Harcourt refinery, commissioned in 1989, is undergoing similar updates and is expected to begin operations soon.

Onanuga urged Nigerians to ignore the false rumors circulating about the refinery’s operations and assured that the revitalized refinery is now a key asset for the nation.
