In his remarks, Bwala emphasized that despite the change, there was no confusion over the responsibilities within the presidential media team. He also stated, “We are all colleagues, and we are not concerned with titles or who occupies which position. Our focus is to fulfill the president’s mandate.”

Bwala’s appointment effectively concludes the uncertainty surrounding Ngelale’s future with the presidency. Ngelale, who previously announced a leave of absence in September 2023 citing a family medical emergency, has now officially been replaced.

Ngelale’s leave was initially presented as a break to address urgent health concerns in his family. In a message posted on his WhatsApp platform, he mentioned submitting a memo to the Chief of Staff notifying him of his decision to pause his duties, which included his roles as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action and Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen. He expressed hope of returning to full-time service when the situation allowed.

However, multiple sources within the presidency have revealed that Ngelale’s departure was not solely due to health reasons. They point to a power struggle between Ngelale and Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, as a contributing factor. The tension between the two men, who held similar advisory roles, created confusion within the civil service and led to escalating conflicts. Ngelale’s perceived arrogance and his strained relationships with journalists and the media further strained his position.

Sources also indicated that Ngelale’s close ties with key figures like the president’s son, Seyi Tinubu, and Femi Gbajabiamila, the president’s chief of staff, initially bolstered his position within the administration. However, his refusal to reconcile with Onanuga and other internal disputes led to his eventual removal.

Ngelale’s departure and Bwala’s appointment reflect ongoing efforts within the Tinubu administration to streamline communications and resolve internal conflicts. Despite Ngelale’s hopes for a return to national service, his tenure as Tinubu’s media spokesperson has now come to a definitive end.
