The Presidency has dismissed former presidential candidate Peter Obi’s decision to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as politically insignificant.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, criticised Obi in a statement titled “Imprisoned by Ambition: Welcome to 2027, Peter Obi’s Reckless Misreading of Politics and Power.” According to the aide, Obi’s switch from the Labour Party (LP) to the ADC is unlikely to alter Nigeria’s political dynamics.

Dare stated that the move was largely met with indifference and follows a familiar pattern observed in the country’s political landscape. He described Obi’s political approach as exhausted, noting that the defection does not indicate a new direction but rather continues a previously worn-out strategy.

The aide further accused Obi of using the defection as an opportunity to launch attacks on President Tinubu, whom he praised for his political experience, influence, and focus on governance and policy rather than populist rhetoric. Dare argued that Obi’s actions reflect an inflated sense of self-importance, adding that his presidential ambitions lack the backing of strong democratic credentials or a broad national coalition representing Nigeria’s political diversity.
