Speaking during a nationwide address on Tuesday at 7:00 PM, Tinubu stated that the decision was prompted by the escalating political crisis in the state. He explained that under Section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the governor and deputy governor were required to formally request a proclamation of emergency, which they failed to do.
“After thorough consideration of the political situation in Rivers State, and in the absence of a formal request from the Governor and Deputy Governor, I find it necessary to invoke Section 305 of the Constitution to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, effective immediately,” Tinubu announced.
The crisis in Rivers State has seen rising tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government, necessitating federal intervention to restore order.
