“President Trump Threatens China With Massive Tariffs Over Russian Oil Purchases”
US President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that he is prepared to impose sanctions on Moscow, provided that all NATO allies agree to completely halt purchases of Russian oil and enforce their own sanctions measures.
Trump also proposed that members of the transatlantic alliance consider imposing tariffs ranging from 50 percent to 100 percent on China, suggesting that such actions could help bring an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, which he described as a message to NATO nations and the world, Trump wrote, “I am ready to do major sanctions on Russia when all NATO nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO nations stop buying oil from Russia.”
The US President has repeatedly threatened additional sanctions against Russia, particularly after Moscow launched its largest aerial attack on Ukraine last weekend, aiming to target the revenue Russia relies on for its ongoing military operations. However, Trump has yet to implement these measures, causing frustration in Kyiv.
Following his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Trump criticized NATO members’ continued purchase of Russian oil as “shocking,” arguing that it undermines the alliance’s bargaining power over Moscow.
He further emphasized the potential role of NATO-imposed tariffs on China, which is believed to have strengthened strategic cooperation with Russia, noting that such economic pressure could influence Russia’s actions. “I believe that NATO sanctions on Russia, combined with NATO placing 50% to 100% tariffs on China to be fully withdrawn after the war ends, will be of great help in ending this deadly, but ridiculous, war,” Trump stated.
He added, “China has a strong control, and even grip, over Russia, and these powerful tariffs will break that grip. If the 32-member alliance does as I say, the war will end quickly. If not, you are just wasting my time.”
