The faction of the Social Democratic Party loyal to its reinstated National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, has announced the expulsion of 13 prominent members, including the party’s former presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, following a contentious national convention and presidential primary held in Abuja.

According to Ireporter Online, the convention also saw delegates aligned with Gabam endorsing Lagos-based businessman Abimbola Atanda as the party’s new sole presidential candidate through a voice vote. The expelled members include key figures such as the factional National Chairman Sadiq Gombe, National Secretary Olu Agunloye, and National Publicity Secretary Rufus Aiyenigba, alongside several other senior party officials.

In a sweeping restructuring move, the convention dissolved the existing National Working Committee before immediately constituting a new leadership team. The newly formed executive has Gabam retaining his position as National Chairman, while other appointments include Adebola Abbas as National Secretary, Ibrahim Biu as Deputy National Secretary, Dr. Uchechukwu Chukwuma as National Organising Secretary, and Zakari Nadabu as National Publicity Secretary, among others.

Party leaders stated that the disciplinary action was necessitated by alleged violations of the party’s constitution and acts considered detrimental to internal unity and discipline. The leadership maintained that the affected individuals engaged in actions that undermined cohesion within the party structure.

Speaking after the oath-taking ceremony, Gabam described the internal crisis as a man-made challenge that had now been resolved through due process. He expressed confidence that the party had emerged stronger, insisting that internal disagreements ultimately strengthened political organisations rather than weakening them.
