The funeral service for the Wigwes took place on Saturday, March 9, at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

During the event, Governor Fubara delivered a speech questioning the purpose of political struggles and urging reflection on their impact on society. In response, Akpabio suggested that if Governor Fubara believed the political struggle was meaningless, he should withdraw from it.

“We’re not going to cry in one day alone; we’ll cry so many days,” Akpabio said. He went on to recount the achievements and influence of Herbert Wigwe, suggesting that his legacy should prompt reflection on the purpose of political struggles.

Expressing his disapproval of Akpabio’s remarks, Atedo Peterside shared his sentiments on X, criticizing the Senate President for making political jibes at a solemn event. He described Akpabio’s comments as self-centered and insensitive, particularly his attempt to garner sympathy by comparing applause received by Peter Obi to his own reception.

Peterside’s critique underscores the perception that Akpabio’s remarks were inappropriate for the occasion, as they detracted from the solemnity of the funeral proceedings.
