Senate Vows Quick Approval, Strong Oversight Of 2026 Budget

According to Ireporter Online, the Senate has assured President Bola Tinubu of its commitment to collaborating with the Executive to ensure the timely passage and effective implementation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.

The pledge was made on Monday by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during a public hearing and interactive session on the 2026 budget organized by the Senate Committee on Appropriations at the National Assembly in Abuja. Represented at the event by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, Akpabio emphasized the Senate’s dedication to its constitutional responsibilities of oversight, accountability, and legislative support aimed at stabilizing the economy and improving national welfare.

Akpabio noted that budget hearings should not be treated as routine legislative exercises but as moments of national introspection. “Budget hearings are not mere rituals of governance. They are occasions when a nation pauses to ask itself hard questions: Where are we? Where are we going? And are our resources aligned with our aspirations?” he said.

Highlighting the country’s economic challenges, he pointed to rising inflation, infrastructural decay, unemployment, and insecurity as issues impacting citizens daily. Despite the difficulties, Akpabio expressed optimism, urging a shift from traditional budgeting to more impactful fiscal planning. Quoting British economist John Maynard Keynes, he said, “Our task is not simply to spend more, but to spend better; not merely to allocate funds, but to convert budgets into outcomes and appropriations into impact.”

He identified fiscal discipline, tax reform, macroeconomic stability, infrastructure delivery, and effective implementation as essential pillars for Nigeria’s economic recovery and growth. Akpabio also commended the Appropriations Committee for making the budget process open to public scrutiny, describing it as a demonstration of democratic accountability.

Urging active participation from stakeholders, experts, and citizens, he stated, “Your insights, critiques, and recommendations are not interruptions to governance; they are its oxygen. Engage not as spectators, but as partners in national progress.” He concluded by emphasizing that a budget reflects a nation’s values and priorities and must translate into tangible improvements in citizens’ lives.
