Senator Imasuen to Officially Defect to APC on June 12, Citing LP’s Leadership Crisis
Senator Neda Imasuen, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, has announced his imminent defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Representing the Edo South Senatorial District, Imasuen disclosed that his formal declaration will take place on June 12 in Benin City, Edo State.
In a public statement on Sunday, the senator criticized the Labour Party, describing it as fragmented and lacking clear leadership. He lamented the party’s current state, stating it no longer reflects the hopes and expectations of Nigerians.
“Today, the Labour Party is in disarray. It’s difficult to even identify who the actual chairman is,” Imasuen noted. “Over recent months, it has become apparent that the party is disconnected from the people it claims to represent. The absence of ideological coherence and a progressive agenda makes meaningful reform from within nearly impossible.”
Imasuen praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, calling his policies courageous and essential for national progress. He said joining the APC would provide him with a more robust platform to advance national interests and serve his constituents more effectively.
“With President Tinubu at the helm, we see decisive action on issues long neglected. His courage is commendable, and I believe the APC is better positioned to drive Nigeria forward,” he added.
Imasuen’s defection will raise the APC’s Senate membership to 69. If expected defections from Senators Sampson Ekong and Etim Bassey Aniekan—both formerly of the PDP—materialize, the APC could increase its total to 71 senators, further consolidating its legislative dominance.
