Sh**cking Revelations: Justice Amina Augie Details Judiciary’s Decline And Urges Immediate Overhaul

Justice Amina Augie, who recently retired as the sixth female justice of the Supreme Court, has spoken out about the alarming state of Nigeria’s judiciary. During a recent event hosted by the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, Augie described the judiciary as being on the brink of collapse. She revealed the challenges she faced during her tenure, including threats to her life and the influence of political godfathers undermining the system.

Reflecting on her experience as the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal in Lagos, Augie shared how her own staff threatened her when she tried to enforce discipline. In a bold move, she exposed the entrenched corruption within the judiciary, particularly in the registry, where senior staff had been entrenched for decades without any significant reforms.

Augie recounted how she outsmarted the perpetrators of this corruption by documenting her findings and submitting a detailed report to the President of the Court of Appeal. This led to the transfer of over a dozen staff members who had been abusing their positions for years, rendering their godfathers powerless. This experience demonstrated the extent of the rot within the system and how deeply entrenched power dynamics can block progress.

However, the retired justice stressed that while judges often bear the blame for delays and inefficiencies, the real issue lies with the system’s staff who play a crucial role in case management. She highlighted how certain judicial officers, driven by political connections, are placed in positions they are ill-equipped for, further deepening the crisis.

She also pointed out the desperation among lawyers seeking the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), leading to the piling up of frivolous cases in courts. This, she said, exacerbates the workload and delays in the judicial process, making it even harder to achieve justice.

Augie emphasized that reforming the judiciary is as vital as reforming any other sector in Nigeria. She called for comprehensive judicial sector reforms, including specialized training and education for those entering the judicial profession. Without a paradigm shift and proper leadership, she warned, the judicial system would continue to falter.
