Simon Ekpa To Face Finnish Court Over Terrorism Allegations
Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafran separatist leader, is scheduled to appear before a Finnish court in June 2025 on terrorism-related charges, according to a report by BBC Pidgin.
Ekpa was arrested in November 2024 by Finnish authorities alongside four others. The arrests were made on suspicion of terrorism-related offences, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism.…READ MORE…
Finnish police allege that Ekpa, who identifies himself as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, utilized social media platforms to encourage violent activities in Nigeria’s South-East region, with both civilians and government institutions reportedly targeted.
Local Finnish media outlet Yle reported that the Päijät-Häme District Court had ordered Ekpa to be held in custody. He faces charges of publicly inciting the commission of a crime with terrorist intent.
The Nigerian Federal Government has also taken decisive action by placing Ekpa on its terrorism sanctions list along with 16 others. As a result, his assets and economic interests have been frozen in line with the crackdown on individuals linked to terrorism.
Initially represented by attorney Ilkka Kopra—who confirmed the court’s decision to detain him—Ekpa is now being represented by a new legal counsel, Kaarle Gummerus, following Kopra’s retirement.
Gummerus confirmed receipt of the case’s pre-trial documents and acknowledged that the trial is slated for June 2025. Speaking with BBC Pidgin, he stated that the legal team is currently reviewing the case materials to determine the next steps in their defense strategy.
