South Africa Opposition Leader Malema Reportedly Sentenced To Jail
According to Ireporter Online, a South African court has sentenced opposition politician Julius Malema to five years in prison over allegations that he fired a rifle into the air during a political rally. The ruling was delivered on Thursday by a magistrate’s court, drawing significant public attention and a heavy presence of supporters outside the courthouse.
Malema, who leads the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was previously found guilty on five counts, including unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a weapon in a public space. The charges are linked to a 2018 incident that occurred at a stadium in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province.
Following the sentencing, hundreds of EFF supporters dressed in the party’s signature red colours gathered outside the court in solidarity with their leader as legal proceedings unfolded. Shortly after the verdict was announced, Malema’s legal team promptly filed an application for leave to appeal the judgment at a court in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London.
If the conviction and sentence are ultimately upheld on appeal, it could prevent Malema from serving as a member of parliament, potentially dealing a major political blow to the EFF, which remains one of South Africa’s leading opposition parties and currently holds the position of the fourth-largest party in the national legislature. The party continues to maintain strong support, particularly among younger voters, largely driven by its advocacy on issues of racial inequality in post-apartheid South Africa.
