Southeast Leaders Demand End To Roadblocks As Tinubu Visits
President Bola Tinubu emphasized the need for unity and nation-building during his inaugural visit to Enugu State, stating that with the elections concluded, it’s time to come together as Nigerians, as “none of us controls our mother tongue…READ MORE…
Tinubu firmly pledged that his administration would finish the Eastern Rail Line connecting Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, alongside a commitment to unlock the vast oil and gas reserves in the Anambra Basin.
During his interactive session with Southeast leaders, he commended Governor Peter Mbah for his unwavering dedication to human and infrastructural development. Mbah in turn hailed Tinubu as a true federalist and congratulated him on receiving the THISDAY Man of the Year Award.
Southeast leaders have also called on Tinubu to dismantle roadblocks and checkpoints established by security forces in the region.
While discussing the rail project, former Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, commended the completion of the Port Harcourt to Aba segment and urged prioritization of the remaining sections to enhance Nigeria’s non-oil exports and drive economic growth.
Another Enugu State native, Chris Ngwu, highlighted the potential of the Anambra Basin, claiming it holds over one billion barrels of oil and approximately 30 billion cubic feet of gas. He stressed the importance of developing these resources for the region’s economic benefit.
Responding to requests regarding the rail line, President Tinubu assured attendees, “It’s a work in progress. I inherited these critical issues and am dedicated to addressing them.”
On the subject of gas infrastructure, he acknowledged the importance of gas as an alternative to petrol and affirmed the need for accelerated investment in it, stating, “We will work on this together, and I’m fortunate to have supportive governors.”
In his remarks, Tinubu recognized various dignitaries present, particularly praising former Senate President Dr. Ken Nnamani for his efforts in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy against attempts to disrupt it.
Earlier in the meeting, Tinubu lauded Governor Mbah’s development vision, inaugurating several state government projects.
He reiterated that the removal of the fuel subsidy was imperative to avoid burdening future generations. “We cannot bankrupt the future of our children before they are even born,” he asserted.
Among the projects inaugurated by Tinubu were the GTC Smart Green School, New Haven/Bisalla Road, the International Conference Centre, the Command-and-Control Centre, and 150 patrol vehicles equipped with surveillance technology.
Tinubu commended Mbah for his achievements, stating, “You are doing a fantastic job, irrespective of your political party.” He noted that the election season has concluded and the time for leaders to make progress for the nation is now.
In praising Mbah, he remarked, “Your commitment to development encourages me. We can work together to build Nigeria and create a brighter future.”
Mbah referred to Tinubu as an exemplary federalist and congratulated him for his recent accolade from THISDAY. He outlined his ambition to enhance Enugu’s economy, predicting growth from $4.4 billion to $30 billion within four years, contingent upon improved security, quality education, and accessible healthcare.
Furthermore, leaders from the Southeast urged Tinubu to dismantle roadblocks and checkpoints, arguing that they inhibit the movement of goods and increase costs, negatively impacting the regional economy.
Mr. Onyemuche Nnamani, the Commissioner representing the Southeast at the Police Service Commission, highlighted the drawbacks of these roadblocks as inefficient and costly, noting that with the new command and control center and advanced surveillance systems, traditional checkpoints are no longer necessary.
