Sowore’s Arrest Sparks Reactions As Police Insist ‘No Torture In Custody’

The Nigeria Police Force has stated that the recent arrest of human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was based on credible and corroborated allegations, including forgery, cyberstalking, and other offences under active investigation, according to IReporter Online.

In a statement issued yesterday, Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Muyiwa Adejobi, stressed that Sowore’s arrest followed all legal and constitutional protocols, with his rights fully respected.

He confirmed that Sowore was granted bail within the 48-hour window stipulated by Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and has been informed of the allegations against him.

The police added that he will soon appear in court to face the charges through a lawful and transparent judicial process, according to IReporter Online.

The statement also dismissed claims that Sowore was tortured in custody, calling such reports “false and grossly misleading.” Police clarified that the viral image of Sowore with a bandaged arm showed an item he already possessed before his arrest.

The Inspector-General of Police has, however, ordered an internal probe into how the bandage was accessed while in detention, noting that Sowore declined independent medical evaluation by police doctors on two occasions—August 7 and August 8, 2025.

The police maintained that the detention was backed by a valid remand order from a competent court and urged the media and public to avoid sensationalism that could undermine public trust.

They reiterated their zero-tolerance policy for torture and commitment to upholding human rights, respect for the rule of law, and fair justice for all, according to IReporter Online.
