The colourful event, held last month, drew thirty-three staff members who swapped their usual screen time for sunshine, laughter, and reflection in a one-of-a-kind corporate retreat.

Now in its fifth edition, the initiative has become a hallmark tradition for the company—an intentional pause from the demands of the digital workspace to strengthen human connection. In a lively convoy, the team departed Uyo, leaving behind laptops and deadlines for an adventure that began at a local jetty. From there, three speedboats filled with food, drinks, and eager faces cruised toward the serene Iko Beach, where a day of games, bonding, and relaxation awaited.

Speaking during the retreat, the Chief Executive Officer of Start Innovation Hub, Mr. Hanson Johnson, described the initiative as a visionary response to a turning point in the company’s history. He recalled that the “No Laptop Day” concept was born after a major disruption in 2020, when the organisation lost access to its devices for a week. “It was a defining experience,” Johnson noted. “Since then, we decided that the last Monday of every September would be reserved for unplugging—no laptops, no deadlines—just human connection.”

He further explained that the policy has evolved into a cornerstone of the company’s culture, fostering trust, teamwork, and emotional well-being among employees. “It’s not just a break from work—it’s how we build stronger teams and nurture the sense of belonging that inspires true innovation,” he added.

The CEO also used the occasion to promote local tourism, praising Iko Beach as one of Akwa Ibom’s best-kept natural treasures. “You don’t have to travel abroad to find beauty and peace,” Johnson remarked. “This place reminds us of the charm our own state holds.”

A highlight of the celebration came when Saviour Henry was named Most Outstanding Staff Member of 2025. The announcement sparked excitement as Johnson presented him with a ₦1 million reward in recognition of his dedication and exceptional performance. Visibly emotional, Henry expressed deep gratitude to his colleagues, saying his achievement reflected the collective effort and team spirit within the organisation.

As the sun dipped and the boats headed back to Uyo, laughter and camaraderie filled the air. The experience, many agreed, went beyond a day at the beach—it was a reaffirmation that innovation thrives not just through technology, but through people and purpose.
