States Planning To Generate Power Amidst Electricity Tariff Hike

Following the signing of the new Electricity Act into law by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, there has been a push for reforms in the power sector, aiming to decentralize control and attract private sector investments.

As reported by The Punch, at least 12 out of Nigeria’s 36 states are poised to establish their independent electricity regulatory commissions, in line with the provisions of the 2023 Electricity Act. Some of these states include:

1. Ekiti State: The Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, has revealed that Ekiti State has been generating and transmitting electricity through its Independent Power Project (IPP). The state aims to attract investors, improve social welfare, and bolster businesses through strategic interventions in infrastructure development.
2. Lagos State: Lagos has been at the forefront of independent electricity supply efforts since the passage of its Electricity Act. The state, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, initiated power generation projects despite facing challenges. It remains committed to advancing its mission in this regard.
3. Benue State: Efforts are underway in Benue State to establish a power-generating firm, according to the state’s Commissioner for Power and Transport, Omale Omale. The government has commenced transmission programs and policies to bolster the electricity sector.
4. Nasarawa State: The state government has partnered with the Nigeria Off-Grid Market Acceleration Programme to implement energy projects aimed at enhancing and sustaining electricity supply. This collaboration aligns with Nasarawa State’s vision of becoming one of Nigeria’s top economically competitive states.
5. Kano State: Kano State has expressed readiness to generate power for residents and businesses, with ongoing projects nearing completion. The government has invested in independent power projects, signaling its commitment to addressing the energy needs of its populace.

Several other states, including Kebbi, Osun, Ondo, Zamfara, Sokoto, Oyo, Edo, Kaduna, and Enugu, have also indicated their readiness to embark on similar initiatives, demonstrating a collective effort to mitigate the challenges posed by the electricity tariff hike and ensure sustainable power supply across Nigeria.
