Tensions Rise: Lagos Police Warns Of Chaos As October 1 Protest Looms!

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olarenwaju Ishola, has issued a strong warning ahead of the nationwide hardship protest scheduled for October 1, organized by various civil society groups in response to the ongoing economic difficulties in Nigeria.

During a town hall meeting on Friday, attended by traditional rulers and religious leaders from across the state, CP Ishola cautioned individuals or groups against attempting to disrupt or hijack the peaceful protest. He emphasized that any breakdown of law and order would not be tolerated.

The police chief reassured Lagos residents of a significant police presence to ensure their safety and maintain public order throughout the protest. “We are not stopping anyone from protesting, it is your legitimate right. We will protect all to prevent miscreants from hijacking it,” he stated.

He further reiterated the police command’s commitment to ensuring that no individual or group is allowed to incite violence or destroy property during the protests. “Protesters must not infringe on the rights of others or disturb public peace. Any act of lawlessness or violence will not be condoned,” CP Ishola added.

The commissioner reminded the public that Independence Day should be a time of celebration, but some groups were attempting to use the occasion for other purposes. He assured that security agencies would work diligently to ensure a successful Independence Day celebration, urging protesters not to interfere with those who want to celebrate.

He also warned that the police would enforce a court order restricting the nationwide protests against hunger and economic hardship to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota. “Protesters must adhere to the law. No other locations in Lagos are approved for demonstrations,” he stressed.

Dapo Amao, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lagos, echoed the commissioner’s sentiments, emphasizing that while citizens have the right to protest, they must do so peacefully and responsibly. He warned against allowing disruptive elements to create chaos during the demonstration, stating, “We will collaborate with other security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property.”

Amao urged protesters to respect the rights of others engaged in lawful activities and refrain from causing disturbances, reminding citizens to give the government time to address the economic challenges.

Adedotun Keshinro, the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, also advised that any protest must remain peaceful, urging participants not to allow it to escalate into violence. He assured that security forces would work together to protect lives and property throughout the demonstration.
