President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following a deadly attack by suspected terrorists on the Nuku and Woro communities.

According to Ireporter Online, the assault, which occurred on Tuesday in Woro village, left at least 162 people dead, making it the deadliest armed attack recorded in Nigeria so far this year. A Red Cross official and local authorities confirmed the casualty figure.

Reacting to the incident, the President approved the establishment of a new military command tasked with leading “Operation Savannah Shield,” aimed at neutralising the attackers and safeguarding vulnerable communities. The directive was conveyed in a statement issued Wednesday night by the presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

President Tinubu strongly condemned the attack, describing it as cowardly and inhumane, and accused the perpetrators of deliberately targeting defenceless civilians in what he termed a failed campaign of terror. He expressed outrage that the victims were killed for rejecting extremist indoctrination and choosing to practise a peaceful and non-violent form of Islam.

The President praised the affected communities for resisting radicalisation despite pressure from the attackers, noting that their commitment to peace and dialogue stood in contrast to the violent ideology being imposed on them.

He further called for close cooperation between federal and state authorities to provide relief for affected residents and ensure that those responsible for the atrocities are brought to justice. President Tinubu also offered prayers for the deceased and extended condolences to bereaved families, as well as to the government and people of Kwara State.
