To Be Obidient Is Better Than Sacrifice: The Spiritual Implications Of Peter Obi’s Campaign Slogan

As Nigerians look forward to the 2023 presidential elections one sure thing that comes to the mind of every citizen is may the best choice for Nigeria emerge as the president, there is no denying the fact that the majority of Nigerians want the best for their country.

In every election, there is always a certain phrase that voters coin after their favourite party/aspirant; in 2015, the mantra was time for a change, which the APC used to its full advantage to unseat the reigning PDP, which had ruled for 16 years. If you recall the electoral battle then it was all about change and change everywhere you go.

Campaign slogans are critical to the success of any campaign organization. For example, when voters are presented with a difficult selection, they prefer to favour the most popular viewpoint. To sway voters, political parties will focus on establishing catchphrases about their party or policy.

As a result, in this example, the slogan becomes a memorable phrase that embodies the essence of a political candidate or cause. It not only raises public awareness but also encourages people to take positive action.

Nigerians insisted on change in 2015, and to God be the Glory, they received the changes in leadership that they demanded. Similar to previous presidential elections, the current catchphrase is “To be Obidient,” “Trying to be Obidient,” and “Obidience is better than sacrifice.”

The phrase Obidience is better than sacrifice is a Biblical event that occurred in the books of First Samuel.

1 Samuel 15:22-23

And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

The scriptures’ had so many verses that says Obedience is actually  better than sacrifice.  Let us define the term Obedience;

Obeying a command, request, or law, or submitting to the authority of another. This means doing what is required of you in order to please the person in charge of you.

What is sacrifice?

Is the act of giving up something valuable for the purpose of something more important or worthwhile, and in religious terms, it is the act of killing an animal or human or surrendering an item as a sacrifice to a deity.

Sacrifice means making an effort to placate or lessen the wrath of a superior whom you have disobeyed.

A sacrifice is required as a result of disobedience. The necessity for sacrifice is avoided by obedience. Disobedience results in a curse, but obedience brings blessings.

Jeremiah 7: 22- 23  For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23 But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’

The scripture says in Romans 5:19; For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

God accepts sacrifices but prefers Obedience because sacrifice is as a result of disobedience. So as you can see it is better to Obey than to Sacrifice.

The spiritual substance of this “Obedience mantra is quite profound in that it is far preferable to simply follow the clarion call of the people, which represents God’s voice, by exercising your right to vote for competent leaders of your choice, rather than to sacrifice years of misery for a better existence.

It is preferable to obey than to put up with further years of a deteriorating educational system, a failing health-care system, and widespread despondency.

Though God may accept a sincere sacrifice, He desires “Obidience” even more.
