Toke Makinwa Reveals Why She Quit Paying Tithe In Church

Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa has disclosed why she no longer pays her tithe to churches. According to Ireporter Online, the entrepreneur explained that her decision followed deep personal reflection on how financial resources can be best used to help people in need.

In a recent interview, Makinwa said her perspective on tithing has evolved over the years. She questioned the practice of contributing large sums to churches while many congregants continue to struggle with basic expenses such as rent, medical bills, and daily living costs.

Makinwa described what she terms “post-traumatic church syndrome,” referring to the emotional and spiritual distress some individuals experience due to their encounters within religious spaces. This prompted her to examine how religious institutions handle funds and to reconsider the impact of her giving.

She revealed that rather than donating to church accounts, she now prefers to support individuals directly when they face urgent needs. Reflecting on her past, Makinwa shared that seven years ago, she donated an entire brand endorsement deal to her church, believing it would bring financial blessings. Today, she chooses to direct her contributions to hospitals, maternity wards, widows, and strangers with genuine needs.

According to Makinwa, churches are already established and many pastors are financially comfortable, yet countless people cannot afford essential services. She emphasized that giving should stem from personal conviction rather than societal pressure or tradition.

She urged people to carefully consider how they provide support, highlighting that assistance should target areas where the impact is tangible. “If I have money and someone needs it to pay rent, why should I pass it into a building that’s already rich? I would rather give directly to those in need. Giving should be based on personal conviction,” she said.
