Tragedy In The Sky: Retired Air Vice Marshal D!es Midair On British Airways Flight To Abuja

A British Airways flight from London to Abuja was forced to make an emergency diversion to Barcelona, Spain, following the death of a retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal from Anambra State.

According to Ireporter Online, the aircraft departed London’s Heathrow Airport at about 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, and was scheduled to land at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by 5:00 a.m. on Monday. However, at approximately 1:30 a.m., the pilot declared a medical emergency after the elderly passenger—believed to be in his early 80s—suffered a health crisis midair.

Reports indicate that the deceased had been unwell prior to boarding and was being flown home for continued medical treatment before he passed away. He was said to be among the few surviving retired air vice marshals from Anambra State.

The tragic development reportedly caused panic among passengers, leading to a second medical situation involving a pregnant woman whose condition was not immediately confirmed as of press time.

British Airways, in a message to affected passengers, expressed deep regret over the incident and extended its condolences. The airline assured travelers of necessary support, urging them to check their emails and utilize its Live Chat service for updates and assistance.

A replacement aircraft was later arranged to continue the journey to Abuja. While the initial plan was to depart Barcelona at 2:00 p.m. local time and arrive in Abuja by 7:00 p.m., the schedule was slightly adjusted to 2:50 p.m. departure, with arrival expected around 5:45 p.m. Nigerian time.
