Tragic: Elderly Man Charged With Axe Murder Of Brother’s Wife In Ebonyi

In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked the community, the Ebonyi State Police have brought charges against a 61-year-old man, Moses Nweze, for the alleged brutal murder of his elder brother’s wife, Mrs. Mary Nwomege.

The tragic incident, which occurred on February 24, 2024, sent shockwaves through the community as Nweze reportedly attacked Mrs. Nwomege while she was cooking, striking her from behind with an axe.

Following his arrest, Nweze was swiftly arraigned before an Abakaliki Magistrate Court on Monday, where the grim details of the crime were laid bare by the police counsel, Eze Chinagorom.

The charge against Nweze, as read in court records, described the gruesome act as an unlawful causing of death by hitting Mrs. Nwomege with an iron axe, a violation under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Law Cap 33 Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009.

However, in a procedural twist, the Presiding Magistrate, Lilian Ogodo, ruled that the court lacked jurisdiction over the matter, thus halting further proceedings. Consequently, Nweze was remanded in custody at the Abakaliki Correctional Service, pending the transfer of the case file to the Ministry of Justice for further action.

Meanwhile, amidst the legal proceedings, the victim’s daughter, Chinasa Nwomege, recounted the traumatic ordeal, recalling the moment she witnessed her mother being viciously attacked by her uncle.

“I heard my mother’s distressed breathing and rushed outside to witness the horrifying scene. My uncle, Moses, was relentlessly striking her with an axe. Thanks to the timely intervention of neighbors, we managed to rush my mother to the hospital,” Chinasa recounted tearfully.

As the family grapples with the devastating loss, they are fervently seeking justice for the untimely demise of Mrs. Mary Nwomege, whose life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence.
