Unconfirmed Number Of Person Feared Killed As Shiites Clash With El-Rufai‘s Convoy

An unspecified number of people were reportedly killed in a clash between members of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, and security details who attacked Governor Nasir El-Convoy Rufai’s in Kaduna state.

The incident occurred on Thursday in the Rigasa area of Igabi local government, along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Western bypass, when the Governor went to flag off the reconstruction of the road leading to the Kaduna International Airport.

According to some locals, the governor’s convoy collided with IMN members who were protesting along the road, demanding that the Federal Government release the international travel documents of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El- Zakzaky, and his wife Zeenat.

According to Mohammed Ibrahim, a member of the group, the IMN members began their Procession from Gwamna Road junction, heading to Bakinruwa along the expressway, when they encountered the Governor’s convoy coming in the opposite direction. He claims that the security detail attached to the Governor’s convoy immediately opened fire on the innocent protesters, killing some of them and injuring many more.

The Kaduna State police have yet to comment on the incident, but a government official who was in the Governor’s convoy stated that the shitte members were heavily armed with dangerous weapons during the Procession, and when they saw the governor’s convoy, they began attacking the vehicles with catapults and other dangerous weapons, injuring some occupants of the vehicles and passers-by.

He questioned why the security details would have opened fire on unarmed civilians, noting that the shitte members had a sinister motive to join the procession in order to incite violence in the state.
