UNIJOS Halts Exams Amid Rising Tensions Following Plateau Attack

The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has suspended all examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in response to escalating tensions in Jos following a deadly attack in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State. According to Ireporter Online, the university has also advised students and staff to remain indoors and exercise heightened caution as security concerns intensify.

The incident, which occurred around 7:50 pm on Sunday, saw suspected gunmen storm the Gari Ya Waye community, opening fire on residents. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunfire prompted widespread panic, with residents fleeing in multiple directions. Several individuals were killed, while many others sustained injuries of varying severity.

In the aftermath of the attack, angry youths reportedly blocked major roads and assaulted motorcycle riders and passengers, further increasing tension across parts of Jos and raising concerns over a potential breakdown of law and order.

Emmanuel Madugu, Deputy Registrar of Information and Public Relations, stated that the decision to suspend examinations was prompted by the deteriorating security situation. “In view of the late evening fatal attacks by unknown gunmen on residents of Angwan Rukuba, and the consequential tensions generated in the area, the Vice Chancellor has directed that all examinations scheduled for Monday, March 30, and Tuesday, March 31, 2026, are postponed and will be rescheduled accordingly,” he said.

The university urged members of its community to prioritize their safety and remain vigilant. “Members are strongly advised to avoid early morning movements and to report immediately any threats or breaches of public peace to the University Security Division,” the statement added.

UNIJOS management assured that it is coordinating closely with security agencies to monitor the situation and safeguard students and staff. The suspension of examinations highlights the growing insecurity in parts of Plateau State, particularly Jos North, where recent attacks have sown fear among residents. Authorities continue to call for calm while efforts are underway to restore peace and prevent further violence.
