US To Back Nigeria Militarily For Free — DHQ Confirms
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that the United States is providing Nigeria with military support at no cost to enhance the country’s fight against terrorism. According to the DHQ, the assistance includes training, intelligence, and operational support aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s counter-terrorism capabilities.
Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed the development on Friday while briefing journalists on security operations conducted in February 2026. He explained that the support is being coordinated through the United States Africa Command as part of a partnership arrangement.
“The presence of US troops in Nigeria is about partnership. They are here to assist the Nigerian military with training, intelligence, and other needed support,” Onoja stated. He emphasized that all assistance comes at no financial obligation to Nigeria, noting that the US government’s involvement is driven solely by its policy to combat terrorism globally.
Addressing recent attacks and kidnappings in Adamawa State and parts of the North-West, Onoja dismissed claims of new terrorist groups emerging, assuring that military operations against armed groups are ongoing. “Troops are intensifying operations, and these terrorists will ultimately be neutralized wherever they are,” he said, while expressing sympathy for families affected by violence.
On reports that some state governments were negotiating with armed groups, Onoja highlighted that such engagements must involve federal authorities. “State governments, as federating units, can enter agreements, but these must be coordinated with the National Security Adviser,” he explained.
The DHQ also acknowledged public concerns regarding former militants who participated in the Operation Safe Corridor deradicalisation programme. Onoja stated that authorities are working with relevant stakeholders to review the programme and ensure it achieves its objectives without compromising national security.
