Villagers Brace For Possible Attacks After Notorious Bandit Commander’s Death

Residents across parts of the North-West are on high alert, preparing for potential retaliation after the killing of Yellow Dan Bokolo, a notorious bandit commander closely linked to wanted kingpin Bello Turji.

Bokolo, a key figure believed to have orchestrated numerous violent raids and secured crucial forest passages for Turji’s network, was killed on June 29 in a joint operation by the Department of State Services and hybrid security operatives, which also eliminated over 200 of his fighters. The coordinated offensive dealt a severe blow to Turji’s terror structure, weakening operational ties among his cells.

Communities Take Precautions

In Shinkafi, Zamfara State, local resident Sani Ibrahim disclosed that people had begun organizing vigilante groups to defend themselves against possible reprisals.

“We’re prepared to face Turji and his men if they attempt to avenge Bokolo’s death,” he said, adding that residents had openly celebrated the killing, viewing Bokolo as even more dangerous than Turji himself.

Meanwhile, in Katsina State’s Jibia and Batsari local councils, which border Zamfara, residents expressed relief over Bokolo’s demise. A youth leader, Umar Labaran, said the level of insecurity had sharply declined, noting that for the past five months there had been no significant bandit attacks.

He attributed the relative calm to a blend of security deployments and patrols by a local bandit-turned-vigilante leader, Audu Lankai. According to Labaran, recent public health campaigns in the area had been supported by reformed bandits, who now escorted health workers to ensure their safety.

Security Forces Intensify Operations

Following Bokolo’s death, Zamfara authorities escalated their offensive against Turji’s network. Mustafa Kaura, Special Assistant on Media to Governor Dauda Lawal, confirmed that mobile networks had been shut down in parts of Shinkafi to disrupt bandit communications and identify local collaborators through house-to-house searches.

“This is a total war against Turji and other defiant bandits, and we are seeing positive results,” Kaura stated, emphasizing that the government ruled out any negotiations with terrorists.

Conflicting Reports On Turji’s Next Move

While a security expert in Sokoto hinted that Turji was considering surrender due to the loss of his top lieutenants, another analyst, Altine Bashar, dismissed such reports as mere propaganda. Bashar insisted Turji remained active and that unarmed villagers stood little chance against his heavily armed fighters.

He further accused federal authorities of undermining state-level anti-banditry efforts, calling for local rights to bear arms as a means to finally crush the insurgency.

In contrast, Col. Ahmed Usman (retd.), Security Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor, maintained that dialogue remained an option—provided fighters were genuinely repentant.

“History has shown that conflicts are often settled through meaningful engagement rather than prolonged violence. We welcome any initiative that fosters peace in our region,” Usman said.
