Vulnerable Households To Benefit From New National Social Registry
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to expand the National Social Registry (NSR) to include vulnerable households nationwide. According to Ireporter Online, this expansion is part of a broader national reform under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction’s flagship initiative, the One Humanitarian–One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS).
Dr. Bernard M. Doro, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, revealed the initiative during the distribution of food and nutrition assistance to the most affected vulnerable persons in Plateau State. He described OHOPRS as a transformative approach aimed at ensuring that households in need are accurately identified, documented, and integrated into structured social protection systems.
“The National Social Registry serves as a critical national tool for ensuring that support reaches those who truly need it,” Dr. Doro said. He emphasized that the government recognizes that lasting stability requires a forward-looking, integrated approach to vulnerability.
He explained that the reform is guided by a simple but impactful principle: humanitarian aid should not be limited to one-off distributions. Instead, support should serve as an entry point into structured social protection programmes and sustainable pathways out of poverty. Families receiving humanitarian assistance will be connected to initiatives including conditional cash transfers, livelihood restoration programmes, skills development, agricultural productivity support, micro-enterprise financing, and other economic empowerment schemes.
“Our objective is clear: to break the cycle of repeated humanitarian dependency and move vulnerable households toward resilience, stability, and long-term prosperity,” the Minister added.
