We Don’t Play To The Gallery” – Senate Blasts E-Transmission Critics
According to Ireporter Online, the Senate has rejected claims that lawmakers legislate to please the public rather than serve national interests. The Senate spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu, made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, emphasizing that legislators work diligently to advance the welfare of Nigerians.
The comments come amid debates over recent amendments to the Electoral Act, which now allow for the electronic transmission of election results while retaining provisions for technical challenges. Lawmakers noted that in cases of internet or connectivity failures, the traditional Form EC8A will remain the primary tool for result collation.
Adaramodu defended the amendment process, describing it as a meticulous and thorough exercise. He stated, “Anyone who loves Nigeria will know that what we have done today is the best for Nigeria. We don’t play to the gallery. The minor minority that are so melodramatic about it cannot dictate the principles of lawmaking, which require painstaking attention to detail.”
He further explained that lawmakers aim to craft legislation that is robust and minimizes potential flaws, ensuring public trust in the democratic process. “It must be so painstakingly done that the flaws are not so latent as to undermine the trust Nigerians have in our system,” Adaramodu said.
The Senate spokesman also highlighted that differing opinions on the bill reflect the vibrancy of Nigeria’s democracy. “Wherever democracy is thriving, there will be shades of opinions and diverse ideas, and we have to listen to all,” he noted.
