We Were Marked for Death’ – Obasanjo Reveals Chilling Assassination Plot by Abacha Regime!”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed chilling details of an assassination plot allegedly masterminded by the late General Sani Abacha, which he narrowly survived.

Obasanjo shared that he, along with the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and Chief M.K.O. Abiola, was imprisoned during Abacha’s regime, which he described as a dark and dangerous period. He attributed his survival to nothing but the divine intervention and grace of God.

Speaking on Sunday in Ogbor Uvuru, Aboh Mbaise, Imo State, Obasanjo recounted how Abacha had vowed that none of the three would leave prison alive, as part of a broader scheme to solidify his grip on power indefinitely.

“When I was arrested, I initially thought it was a mistake. But I soon realized it was deliberate—Abacha had resolved that certain individuals needed to be eliminated for him to rule perpetually,” Obasanjo recalled.

He said, “I was confused at first because I had done nothing wrong. But when I saw it wasn’t an error, I turned to God in prayer—just like Stephen in the Bible—but with a slight twist. I prayed: ‘Whether they know what they’re doing or not, Lord, forgive them.’”

Obasanjo stated that Abacha confidently declared that Abiola, Yar’Adua, and himself would never leave prison alive. Tragically, both Abiola and Yar’Adua died in custody, while Obasanjo survived, which he attributes solely to divine mercy.

“I came out alive not by my own strength, but purely by the special grace of God,” he said.

Reflecting on his life’s journey, the elder statesman said he is a living testament to God’s extraordinary favor. He cited an example of a 1959 course he took in Ghana, where only two out of nine successful Nigerian participants are still alive.

“This is not to mock those who have passed, may their souls rest in peace, but to highlight the unmerited grace I have received. It’s not that I am better than them; I just see it as God’s partiality in my favor,” Obasanjo concluded.
