We Won’t Let Nigerians Starve! FG Moves To Avert Food Crisis
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, has reassured Nigerians that the federal government is actively working to prevent a looming food crisis in the country. According to a recent report by the United Nations World Food…We Won’t Let Nigerians Starve! FG Moves To Avert Food Crisis
Programme (UNWFP), approximately 33 million Nigerians could face food insecurity in 2025.
In an interview with ireporteronline on Friday night, Kyari acknowledged the severity of the situation but emphasized that the government is taking decisive steps to avert the crisis.
“You said they may face food insecurity, and I like that word may. That gives us a window of opportunity to act. Whoever came up with that figure knows that something can be done to change it. This alarming prediction has made us sit up and take action,” Kyari stated.
He further illustrated the urgency of the situation by comparing it to a plane crash occurring every week, each killing hundreds of passengers—a scenario that should not be ignored.
Government Strategies to Combat Food Insecurity
Kyari revealed that the government has initiated the revitalization of the Bank of Agriculture, a move aimed at providing farmers with better access to credit facilities.
“One major step we are taking is ensuring access to credit for farmers. Just today (Friday), we held a meeting under the National Council to discuss the recapitalization and restructuring of the Bank of Agriculture. Once fully operational, the bank will provide much-needed support to farmers,” he explained.
He assured Nigerians that the government is implementing a series of strategies to enhance food production and distribution.
“It’s no longer business as usual. We are working round the clock to prevent this crisis,” Kyari added.
With food prices skyrocketing and millions at risk, all eyes are now on the government to deliver on its promises and secure the nation’s food supply.
