Wike’s Daring Warning: Carry Your Begging Relatives Out Of Abuja Before It’s Too Late
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that beggars will no longer be tolerated on the streets of Abuja. He expressed his concern over the rising number of beggars in the city, describing their presence as an embarrassment..…CONTINUE READING
Wike emphasized that some individuals posing as beggars are, in fact, criminals contributing to the insecurity in Abuja. He announced that beginning next week, city officials will start removing street beggars and urged those with connections to such individuals to take them off the streets before the crackdown begins.
The grace period to remove beggars is set to expire on Sunday, with enforcement scheduled to commence on Monday. Wike made this announcement during the launch of a road construction project in the Katampe District.
He stated, “In terms of security, let me be clear: we have declared war on this issue. Abuja should not be seen as a beggars’ city. If you know of a sibling who begs on the streets, from next week, we will be removing them. It’s embarrassing for visitors to encounter beggars as their first impression of the city. Sometimes, they may not even be beggars but criminals in disguise. This will not be tolerated.
“Therefore, I’m issuing a public order: you have until Sunday to act. Starting Monday, we will remove them. We want Abuja to be a city we can all be proud of. It’s very disheartening, especially as we combat insecurity and see individuals acting suspiciously.”
Wike reassured residents that his administration is committed not only to infrastructure development but also to enhancing security, allowing citizens to feel safe. He acknowledged that some might be displeased with the measures but stressed the importance of prioritizing public safety.
Additionally, Wike shared that the road project will be completed by May next year, and his administration aims to continue progress across various sectors while including the Area Councils in developmental efforts.
