Ex-Lawmaker Walks Free Appeal Panel Clears Farouk Lawan Amidst Otedola’s $500,000 Bribe Claims

Lawan’s original seven-year sentence was reduced to five years by the Court of Appeal in Abuja amid a bribery scandal involving billionaire businessman Femi Otedola.

The case has been under judicial scrutiny since 2013, revolving around allegations that Lawan demanded a $3 million bribe from Otedola to remove his company from a list of firms implicated in the 2012 fuel subsidy fraud. Otedola accused Lawan of accepting $500,000 of the bribe; however, an appeal panel found that the prosecution had not adequately proven that Lawan had demanded or accepted the bribe to absolve Otedola’s company.

Lawan was initially convicted on three counts, receiving sentences of five years each for the first two counts and seven years for the third.

Upon his release, Lawan expressed gratitude, saying, “Alhamdulillah. Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life as I step out of Kuje Custodial Centre, with a heart full of gratitude to Allah SWT for seeing me through this trial. I’m alive, in good health, and in high spirits to reunite with my family, friends, and associates.
