“Women Supporting Women In Nollywood Is A Scam” – Bukunmi Oluwasina Drops Bombshell
According to Ireporter Online, popular Nollywood actress Bukunmi Oluwasina has sparked conversations across social media after declaring that the concept of “women supporting women” in Nollywood is nothing but a scam.
In an interview with BBC Pidgin, the award-winning actress and mother of one stated that female solidarity within the Nigerian film industry is often superficial and short-lived. She explained that while many women publicly claim to support one another, such alliances rarely endure when genuine backing is required.
Oluwasina emphasized that women are generally more inclined to assist men than to help their fellow women. She cited instances where women willingly lend money to men to start businesses but hesitate to offer similar assistance to another woman. According to her, this behavior reflects a deep-rooted issue among women rather than personal fault.
The actress further noted that the problem extends beyond Nollywood, stressing that the so-called “women supporting women” movement often lacks authenticity across different sectors. In her words, the phrase has become more of a slogan than a reality, as many instances of support are either insincere or short-lived.
Speaking on misconceptions surrounding women’s success in the entertainment industry, Oluwasina pointed out that there are many hardworking actresses who thrive without sponsors. However, she lamented that their achievements are frequently undermined by others who hide under their shadows, thereby reinforcing false narratives that every successful woman in Nollywood is being sponsored by a man.
She remarked, “The idea of women supporting women in Nollywood is a scam. It doesn’t last. Even when they show support, it’s not always genuine. Everyone knows that a woman’s biggest rival is often another woman.”
Oluwasina concluded by urging for a change in mindset, emphasizing that real empowerment among women will only emerge when they genuinely stand by and uplift one another, rather than compete or diminish each other’s efforts.
