World Health Mental Day: Hon Ise-Idehen Urges Society To Erase Stigmatization, Calls For Empathy And Support
Good mental health is absolutely fundamental to overall health and well-being. The member representing Egor/Ikpoba Okha federal constituency in the National Assembly, Hon Jude Ise-Idehen has used the opportunity of the World Mental Health day to draw attention to the plight of millions of people suffering from one mental illness or the other.
The lawmaker urged society to remove every form of stigmatization from those dealing with mental health issues and show a sense of empathy and sensitivity towards their plight while he encouraged those suffering from the illness to seek medical attention.
“In recent years, there has been increasing acknowledgement of the important role mental health plays in achieving global development goals, as illustrated by the inclusion of mental health in the Sustainable Development Goals, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
It’s particularly noteworthy this year due to the deteriorating economy and the global pandemic which has interrupted essential mental health services around the world just when they’re needed most.
Healthcare workers, students, old people, and several with prior mental health conditions have been particularly affected.
Leaders across the globe must swiftly act in investing more in life-saving mental health programmes especially during this pandemic and beyond.
We must continue to sensitize the public on the challenges of stigmatization faced by people living with mental health challenges”
Hon Jude Ise-Idehen stated further that everyone living with a mental disorder should seek help and come out of the shadows,
“It’s time to encourage everyone who’s dealing with a mental health issue that they’re not alone, and that getting support and treatment isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength,”
The overall objective of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.
The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.
