“You Can’t Defame And Apologise Later” — Ned Nwoko Blasts TikToker, Demands Online Reform
According to Ireporter Online, Senator representing Delta North in the National Assembly, Ned Nwoko, has reacted to the viral apology issued by a TikToker who previously accused him of plotting to kill his estranged wife and Nollywood actress, Regina Daniels. The lawmaker used the incident to renew his call for the urgent passage of Nigeria’s social media regulation bill.
In a statement shared on his official Instagram page on Friday, Nwoko described the development as a clear reflection of the dangerously unregulated state of Nigeria’s online space, where individuals make damaging allegations purely to chase relevance and online engagement without regard for consequences.
The senator lamented that defamation has become a tool for profit in the digital space, noting that many offenders operate under the belief that they can manipulate public emotions, escape accountability, and later issue apologies when the situation escalates.
He urged Nigerians to throw their weight behind the proposed social media regulation bill, explaining that it seeks to compel social media companies to register and maintain physical offices within the country. According to him, such regulation would ensure that the platforms take responsibility for the contents shared on their networks.
Nwoko further stated that the bill would not only strengthen accountability but also generate employment opportunities, promote technology transfer, enhance tax collection, and make legal action against tech companies more accessible and affordable. He stressed that local media organisations already comply with defamation laws and questioned why foreign tech companies should be exempt from similar responsibilities.
The senator warned that without proper regulation, online defamation would continue unchecked, adding that the issue should concern every Nigerian, as anyone could become the next victim of reckless digital accusations.
