You Go Explain Tire: Edo Residents Reject Obaseki/Ighodalo Over Attempted Humiliation of Royal Kingdom.
Yesterday, the internet was abuzz with outrage as Benin City streets overflowed with anger over the attempted public humiliation of His Royal Majesty, Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, the revered Oba of Benin.
It felt as if the heavens were on the verge of collapsing as the streets filled with citizens, traders, students, and other respected members of the Benin Kingdom. Their message was clear: you do not humiliate us by dragging our King to court.
The issue revolves around Governor Godwin Obaseki’s proposal to establish seven Traditional Councils within the seven local governments of Edo South. According to public information, this move has been perceived as an attempt to undermine the authority and supremacy of the Oba and the Benin Kingdom.
In response, the Oba of Benin suspended the enigies and chiefs who were reportedly supportive of Obaseki’s proposal, viewing their actions as a direct challenge to his authority, and now the chiefs are in court to challenge their suspension.
In line with Burna Boy’s famous catchphrase “You Go Dey Explain Tire No Evidence,” Governor Obaseki and Asue Ighodalo, the PDP gubernatorial candidate in the upcoming elections, have been engaged in a relentless campaign of explanations.
Between them, they’ve issued countless press statements, perhaps even exceeding a dozen, in their efforts to elucidate their positions following the humiliating incident.
Even now, news reaching our desk suggests that Governor Obaseki is being urged to strategically request his allied Enigies to withdraw their lawsuit against the Oba of Benin. This tactical manoeuvre aims to mitigate the potentially adverse effects it could have on the forthcoming election.
Governor Obaseki, having heeded the counsel, has instructed his party to issue a memo urging the parties involved in the lawsuit to withdraw their case. This strategic move aims to prevent any perception of involvement in the suit. Similarly, the Asue campaign organization has taken a similar stance. However, Obaseki’s administration continues to engage in explanations, highlighting the ongoing efforts to address the situation.
Edo people are enraged and have resolved to oppose Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie, the State Secretary to the Government, who coincidentally serves as his running mate in the gubernatorial election. They perceive this alignment as a deliberate effort to perpetuate and conclude the conflict that Obaseki has long waged against the palace. According to them, an Asue victory in the gubernatorial race would signify the fulfillment of Obaseki’s purported nefarious agenda.
Edo residents firmly assert that they are fully cognizant of Obaseki’s involvement in these perceived sacrilegious and abominable acts. They hold the revered Oba of Benin in the highest regard, viewing him as a direct descendant of God on Earth.
The people of Edo are resolute, echoing the sentiment expressed by Godsday Orubebe: “WE WON’T TAKE IT.”
This intricate situation presents a formidable obstacle for Asue Ighodalo’s campaign. The gubernatorial candidate’s commitment to continuing Obaseki’s agenda only intensifies the discontent among the people.
