According to Ireporter Online, President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the importance of tax compliance in driving national development, stating that many Nigerians demand improved infrastructure such as well-equipped hospitals and quality roads but are often unwilling to meet the tax obligations required to fund them.

The President made this known on Friday while speaking at the Africa CEO Forum held in Kigali, Rwanda, where he addressed issues surrounding sustainable financing for public infrastructure and economic growth.

Tinubu noted that taxation remains a difficult subject across all social classes, stressing that development cannot be achieved without adequate revenue generation. He explained that while citizens expect government delivery of essential services, there is often resistance to taxation and, in some cases, opposition to development projects affecting private property.

He further stated that effective governance requires clear planning on funding sources and allocation, especially in critical sectors such as healthcare, road construction, and research and development, referencing lessons from the global COVID-19 pandemic.

According to him, paying taxes is a civic responsibility essential for nation-building, adding that both individuals and corporate bodies must contribute, except where legally exempted.
