The Christmas and New Year holidays are a time for families to reconnect, often the only opportunity for reunions with loved ones who live in different locations.

However, for some, the escalating cost of travel is becoming a burden, with many lamenting the financial strain and possibly being unable to join their families for the festive season.

Rising Transportation Costs

This year, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has raised petrol prices three times, with costs now ranging from ₦568 to ₦998 per litre in Lagos, and exceeding ₦1,030 in other states. This fuel price surge has forced transporters to increase fares, leaving passengers to explore different ways to manage the additional cost while still making their holiday trips.

At major transport companies in Lagos, such as Ekesons, God is God, and Agofure, fares to destinations outside the state—especially to the eastern regions—are priced between ₦35,000 and ₦40,000. Smaller, unaffiliated transporters are charging between ₦25,000 and ₦30,000.

Chidi Nwosu, Head of one of the transport companies, noted that despite the current low turnout of travelers, he remains confident that people will travel during the Christmas period. He added that travel demand would increase, depending on how transportation fares are managed.

Potential for Further Price Increases

Given that Christmas is still weeks away, these fares are not fixed, and could rise further as fuel costs remain high. The period between December 23rd and 31st is expected to see a surge in travel, leading to higher demand and, consequently, more expensive fares.

Surprising Resilience in the Face of Economic Strain

Despite the economic difficulties and high inflation experienced this year, a recent online poll revealed that the hike in transportation costs will not stop many Nigerians from making their Christmas home trips. Over 5,000 respondents affirmed their intention to travel despite the financial strain.

Some respondents expressed their desire to travel but lamented their inability to afford the increased costs. Others, however, are determined to make the journey, with many sharing personal stories of the importance of family visits during the holiday season.

Rose Ogbu from Benue State stated, “No matter how costly the transport is, home is my home. Lagos is not my village. My mom is the village, I must go and see her.” Another respondent, Sunday from Imo State, noted, “I cannot travel, transport is too expensive, but if I find someone to help, I’ll go.”

Tolulope, another respondent, shared, “Even with the costly transportation, I will travel. I have not seen my mother this year, and I must go.” Ruth, another woman, added, “I want to travel early to avoid the rush and high prices.”

Despite the financial challenges, Nigerians are showing resilience, determined to celebrate the season with their families, no matter the cost.
