Zulum Breaks Silence: Why I’m Rejecting Senate Ambition Despite Pressure

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has disclosed that he declined mounting pressure from supporters, close associates and family members to join the race for a Senate seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Ireporter Online, the governor made the revelation during a critical stakeholders meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Maiduguri ahead of the party’s House of Representatives primary election scheduled for Thursday.

Zulum explained that his decision was guided by the need to preserve unity and stability within the party, stressing that he prioritised peace and cohesion over personal political ambition. He noted that stepping into the Senate contest could have created unnecessary tension, adding that maintaining cordial relationships among party members remained his main concern.

The governor further urged aspirants under the APC to embrace dialogue, consultation and mutual understanding in order to strengthen internal harmony. He advocated for consensus-building where possible, while also emphasizing that no constituency should be coerced into accepting imposed candidates.

He added that while consensus remains a preferred approach, democratic participation must still be respected, noting that where agreement fails, the party should allow transparent primary elections to decide candidates.
