UN Reacts To Reported Ambush, Killing Of Over 30 Civilians In Borno
The United Nations has strongly condemned yesterday’s reported ambush and brutal killing of more than 30 civilians in Mukdolo village, Ngala Local Government Area, Borno State.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the UN expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured who are recovering a speedy recovery through its Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Matthias Schmale.
Several people were reportedly injured, and others are still missing as a result of the deadly attack, which was allegedly carried out by an unidentified armed group.
According to reports, the victims of this heinous attack were fishermen and farmers trying to make a living in a dangerous environment. Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and host community members from the neighboring Dikwa Local Government Area were among those present.
Prior to the attack, the village of Mukdolo had been abandoned due to the activities of non-state armed groups.
In response to the tragic development, the UN stated that the deeply shocking attack is yet another horrific reminder of the real threats of violence and insecurity that IDPs and other people affected by the region’s non-international armed conflict face on a daily basis in their struggle to survive.
The UN, through its spokesman in Nigeria, reminded all parties to the conflict of their legal obligations to protect civilians under international humanitarian and human rights law.
The intergovernmental organization also urged state authorities to conduct an immediate investigation into the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.
