He emphasized that the military is content and functions better under democracy, firmly stating that they won’t engage in any acts to sabotage Nigeria’s hard-earned civil rule.

Gusau’s response followed calls from some Nigerians for the military to intervene in the country’s leadership due to perceived failures of democratic governments.

He dismissed insinuations that the troops of the Nigerian military were not well taken care of, asserting that the military would not allow any individual or group to instigate military officers against the current government.

The discussion on coup attempts in Nigeria stemmed from a recent military takeover in neighboring Niger Republic, which was reportedly aimed at preventing the decline of the country due to rising insecurity and economic challenges. A Mass Communication scholar, Prof. Anthony Igyuve, emphasized this view, stating that “the worst democracy is better than the best military rule.”

1. Absence of Democracy: Military coups result in the suspension of democratic institutions such as the constitution, leading to an absence of checks and balances. The power rests solely in the hands of the military, undermining the rule of law and encouraging disorder.
2. Dictatorship: Military rulers exert total control over the country, leading to a lack of representation and the absence of the National Assembly. This dictatorship often disregards the concerns and demands of the people, and authorities are enforced through the use of violence.
3. Human Rights Violation: During military rule, citizens’ basic human rights are frequently violated, including freedom of speech, expression, and association. Draconian laws are imposed, and individuals who challenge them face detention, torture, or even extrajudicial killings.
4. Suppression of Press Freedom: Under military control, press freedom is perceived as a threat, and efforts are made to stifle media and civic space. Journalists who criticize the regime may be abducted, detained, or harmed.
5. Severance of Ties with Foreign Countries: A coup may result in Nigeria losing support from international organizations and foreign countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, and United Nations. Donors that aid Nigeria in key sectors may withdraw their support.
6. Widespread Fear and Anxiety: The militarization of the country during a coup instills fear and anxiety among the population. Citizens live in constant uncertainty and vulnerability.
