JUST IN: Pope Speaks On Coup-Hit Niger
Pope Francis called for a diplomatic resolution to the political turmoil in Niger, which has been ignited by a coup posing a threat to stability in the region.
Speaking to the faithful in St. Peter’s Square after his Angelus prayer, the Pope expressed his concern for the situation and echoed the bishops’ plea for peace and stability in both Niger and the Sahel.
The 86-year-old pontiff also conveyed his support for the international community’s efforts to swiftly find a peaceful resolution that benefits everyone involved.
The military’s removal of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26th marked the fourth coup experienced by a West African nation since 2020.
In the meantime, the new military leader of Niger announced on Saturday that a power transition would not exceed a span of three years. General Abdourahamane Tiani, in a televised speech, emphasized that their goal wasn’t to seize power indefinitely. He stressed that any transition would be limited to three years.
However, he cautioned against any misconception that an attack against the country would be a simple endeavor, stating, “If an attack were to be undertaken against us, it will not be the walk in the park some people seem to think.”
Additionally, he mentioned concerns about ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) possibly mobilizing an occupying force in collaboration with a foreign military, without specifying the particular country involved.
