Niger’s leader following the recent coup has proposed a three-year period for the transition of power after meeting a delegation of leaders from West Africa.

General Abdourahmane Tchiani, in a televised address on Saturday, did not provide specifics about the proposed transition but mentioned that the principles for this process would be determined within 30 days during a dialogue hosted by the ruling military council.

Addressing the delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after their first meeting, Tchiani stated, “Neither the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland nor the people of Niger desire war and remain open to dialogue.”

However, he also asserted, “If an attack were to be undertaken against us, it will not be the walk in the park some people seem to think.”

The coup’s aftermath in Niger has prompted ECOWAS to impose substantial sanctions on the country and announce the deployment of a “standby force” to restore constitutional order. The bloc revealed that a concealed “D-Day” has been agreed upon for potential military intervention, with 11 out of 15 member states committing troops to the operation.
